FRIDAY FASHION SPECTRUM: Peplum and maxis in your summer closet

By Ari Black Chameleon Blogger   The awkward in-between season of spring, summer and winter styles seems to cause up a stir in the closets of girls battling the constantly changing weather. Aside from this issue, it seems that typical styles are going out from last season, leaving fashionistas with confusion: what is still in and what is done with for the summer that lies ahead? The key to this season is to keep the concepts of last season’s styles, but update them with new components that add an innovative touch to the designs that we repeatedly saw throughout the more »

THURSDAY TASTE: Airport food?

By Kyle Rall Chameleon blogger   Zaragoza is a pain to get to. If you aren’t going to Midway, it is way out of the way from almost anywhere in Chicago. That being said, it is worth the trip. What makes Zaragoza unique is its menu. Zaragoza literally serves goat. That’s it. Goat tacos, goat quesadillas, and goat plates. Nothing else. The atmosphere is largely non-existent, because the place is tiny, but it doesn’t matter- the food is great. My experience with goat can be summed up in these five words: I have never eaten it. So, for my first more »

Like waves, nothing ever departs from its source

By Stevenson Valentor Chameleon Staff Writer   Speaking is the vocal manifestation of ideas and feelings old and new.   Many of our ideas remain unspoken, though we may express them wordlessly through emotion or facial expression.   Emotions and facial cues are just subtle expressions that words could have communicated.   But when words are spoken, they may sit around in the air, around in the listeners’ own thoughts.   White caps are the manifestations we know as waves in the water; they come from the wind blowing water to the point where the water curls over itself.   Not more »

MONDAY EPIPHANY: Learning to risk

By Jen Kelso Chameleon Blogger   According to the calendar, 2012 was a leap year. On February 29, we all acknowledged our extra day and maybe did something out of the ordinary, maybe a small celebration of some type. Still, for all intents and purposes, for most of us, 2012 was not much different than any other year. But for Victor Saad, 2012 was truly a leap year in more than just an extra day. Victor spent all year “leaping”—taking risks: jumping, and seeing where he landed. Victor, a Chicago-born man the product of many childhood moves, was working as more »

FRIDAY FASHION SPECTRUM: You are more beautiful than you think

By Ari Black Chameleon Blogger   I am posting and writing about a video today that I believe all women (and even men) should see.  I believe the topic of this Dove Beauty Campaign video parallels with fashion because personal appearance is something everyone worries about.  Though clothes and top trends are fun to experiment with in the fashion world, it is important to remember what really matters: the confidence and self-awareness of individual beauty truly makes every human being magnificent. As I watch this video, it brings me back to the message that my mom repeatedly taught me throughout my more »

THURSDAY TASTE: Summer in a terrible spring

By Kyle Rall Chameleon Blogger Summer is a small Thai and Pan-Asian restaurant under the Granville stop on the Red Line. If you haven’t noticed by now, I am very partial to Asian food, and this place delivers the goods. Summer is not a dive, but it is priced like one- perfect for a college kid on a tight budget. The interior is very modern, but is strangely welcoming. There are pulsing lights, odd colors, and some uncomfortable chairs around the dining area. Trust me-sit against the wall on the padded seats. I have been there several times, and I more »

TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: Here’s to Boston

By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger   It was pretty adorable to eavesdrop on my roommate this morning. She was working hard on a project of hers that’s due tomorrow, but every once in a while, she would stop and let out a cheer. Her brother was running in the Boston Marathon, and she was able to track his progress and his whereabouts online. She also made sure to comment on the photos of him that were posted onto Facebook; you know, the ones that showed off his lovely expanse of man-thigh and his classic running face. If my research serves more »

MONDAY EPIPHANY: Be open to change

According to a 2005 NBC news article, about fifty percent of college students change their majors at least once during their academic career. We all know friends who’ve flip-flopped between one, two or even three majors. I changed my major, and with these odds, chances are you did too. Additionally, eighty percent of college students nationwide come into college undecided—clearly, on the whole, students are a somewhat indecisive bunch.   Still, the good news is that in most cases there’s no cause for alarm. We might feel pressure to know what it is we want to do right away, but more »

FRIDAY FASHION SPECTRUM: Stay stylish at summer music festivals

By Ari Black Chameleon Blogger   In honor of the Lollapalooza selling out, I felt that it was the perfect time to share some of my favorite sites for clothes to wear to events like this. From festivals to concerts, I find that it is hard for girls to balance laying out appropriate yet still daring outfits for these situations. In this post, I will show some possible article choices that should be considered for the variety of upcoming festivals this summer, as well as pointing in more of a broad direction to websites where looks like these can be more »

THURSDAY TASTE: Royal Coffee

By Kyle Rall Chameleon Blogger   Royal Coffee is an incredible Ethiopian coffee house. They also serve food. Normally I am pretty wary of a coffee house that offers actual food, but I decided to try it with a friend anyways. Royal Coffee, first off, is located north of Loyola, one block north past the 400 movie theater. It is a relatively short walk compared other ethnic eateries in the Chicago area. I ordered the combination plate, which can be a breakfast item or can be eaten all day, according to the menu. My friend got the eggs (a little more »

Spring shoppers seek sustainable style

By Sarah McBride Chameleon Staff Writer   When seeking out some new pieces for the spring season, many of us will opt to look for some pieces that keep with the green movement trend.   Didn’t think social movements would affect your clothes? Think again.   Even major stores, including H&M, are now offering sustainable apparel for the eco-conscious.   So, it’s now possible to shop and save the world at the same time. That’s what I call multitasking.   Sustainable brand Greenola offers shoppers a way to shop for conscious apparel and accessories while making a difference in peoples’ more »

Pope Francis: a balance of conservative progressivism

By Evan Jay Peterson Chameleon Staff Writer   With the unexpected resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on February 28, the Catholic Church found itself without a shepherd with Easter quickly approaching.   The College of Cardinals elected Jorge Cardinal Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, as the Catholic Church’s 266th pope on March 13.   Not only was this election quick and decisive, but it was also an historic election, for the 76-year-old is both the first Jesuit pope and the first South American pope.   Francis has proven to be shy, timid, and unassuming in the spotlight.   Though the media more »

WEDNESDAY’S NETFLIX PICK: Cartoon Network

By Katina Beniaris Chameleon Blogger   This Week’s Choice -> All The Cartoon Network Shows!   The Blurb   Over the weekend, a swarm of Cartoon Network shows became available on Netflix. Cartoon Network was one of my favorite channels as a kid. Their shows were imaginative and original as I glued my eyes to the TV and ate my Captain Church. I couldn’t possibly choose one show so I’ll mention some of my favorites.   At A Glance   Shows: Adventure Time, Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd and Eddy, Dexter’s Laboratory Scooby Doo: Mystery more »

TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: It Was Then That The Fox Appeared

By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger   Every time it rolls around, April is a hot mess. It’s rainy, it’s jam-packed with deadlines and it’s the month that marks the end of the world’s hibernation, instigating the burst of energy that causes every aspect of life to move just a little too fast. This time of year reminds me of my high school days, when I had to continually discover that I was not, in fact, Wonder Woman. I could not fulfill all of my commitments, all of the things for which I had signed up or applied. I was stressing more »

FRIDAY FASHION SPECTRUM: DIY- Bleached High Rise Shorts

By Ariahna Black Chameleon Blogger   Last spring I became obsessed with the high-rise shorts look.  Every time I went shopping, I found myself walking into Urban Outfitters disappointed that the shorts were were clearly over priced at $70 and out of my student budget.  No other stores had as authentic-looking Levi’s as Urban, and it was frustrating to consider spending over 200 dollars on three pairs (the minimum number I would buy for my summer wardrobe ahead.) Surprisingly, my mom gave me an interesting suggestion.  She told me to go to Good Will and buy a pair of pants more »

THURSDAY TASTE: Back to Cowtown

By Kyle Rall Chameleon Blogger   Whenever I return home to Kansas City, one of the things I anticipate most is the food. Specifically, the barbecue. Kansas City is the mecca of meat for the United States, and I will stand by that statement, so the barbecue here is the best in the US. Anthony Bourdain, noted food critic,  and I agree on this principle (look it up-Anthony Bourdain’s 13 places to eat before you die). Oklahoma Joe’s is the best barbecue in Kansas City, in my humble opinion. There are many who disagree, and with merit, but my personal more »

WEDNESDAY’S NETFLIX PICK: Sherlock

By Katina Beniaris Chameleon Blogger   This Week’s Choice -> Sherlock (2010-2012)   The Blurb   A spin on Arthur Conan Doyle’s tale of Sherlock Holmes as the eccentric detective solves mysteries in the modern-day streets of London with a military veteran, Dr. John Watson.   At A Glance   Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs Genre: TV Shows, British TV Shows, Crime TV Shows, TV Dramas This movie is: Suspenseful, Witty Rating: 4.5 stars out of five   My Thoughts   Everyone must know “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.” He’s the man with the deerstalker hat and the more »

TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: The One About the Jehovah’s Witnesses

By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger   The UPS guy buzzed my apartment just as woke up last Saturday. I headed downstairs to let him in, but SURPRISE! The UPS guy was actually a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses. (I should really start using the intercom to check who my visitors actually are. Lesson learned.) They handed me a little flier inviting me and my neighbors to discover Jesus at some local seminar later in the week. Then they piled on some “Who Was Moses?” pamphlets and gave me a blessing, wasting no time in moving on to the next building. It more »

MONDAY EPIPHANY: Fair Trade as a powerful world influence

By Jen Kelso Chameleon Blogger   You can tell when you’ve come to a hip coffee shop or an all-natural grocery store when you start seeing everything labeled “Fair Trade Certified,” right? What does “fair trade” mean, anyway? Organic? Local? Expensive? Healthy? Vegetarian? Vegan? Actually, the answer’s pretty simple. According to Fair Trade USA, fair trade products are “just that: fair.” So the people who produced them were justly compensated for their work, and in turn, their communities are bettered, instead of exploited or manipulated. Sounds like a win-win, right? As a Jesuit institution, Fair Trade should be pretty popular more »
