The awkward in-between season of spring, summer and winter styles seems to cause up a stir in the closets of girls battling the constantly changing weather. Aside from this issue, it seems that typical styles are going out from last season, leaving fashionistas with confusion: what is still in and what is done with for the summer that lies ahead?
The key to this season is to keep the concepts of last season’s styles, but update them with new components that add an innovative touch to the designs that we repeatedly saw throughout the last couple months.
Peplum styles have been flourishing in everything from dresses to tank tops lately. A new approach that I spotted was this mesh-like peplum top that put a refreshing twist to the redundant style. Though mesh typically offers a casual look, the peplum design offers a unique element to the mixture to give off a classy statement look. Based on how you dress it up or dress it down, the shirt can be worn to a variety of events.
And it is perfect for warmer weather days.
To try an alternative approach for this mesh shirt, a colored lace bandeau underneath could add a hint of fun with a pair of high-rise jeans and bright lipstick.

Maxi cut out skirts were popular in the fall, along with sheer maxis that covered an attached mini skirt underneath. For the updated approach on the high-rise maxi skirt, the cut out look has added an edgy element to this outfit.
The longer length compliments the classy look of the peplum top, and the mesh material and the cutout are what add the special touches to otherwise common articles of clothing.
Another positive thing about these skirts is the way they highlight the shoes that the fashionista chooses to wear. The skirt almost sets the stage for a pair of bold shoes to be noticed. For a fancier situation, wear your pair of statement heels to dress it up. To wear to class or in a casual setting, throw on a pair of ankle boots, as photographed.
The glasses are what really add the casual feel to this outfit. Embrace the months where the sun is out and shining; throw on those pairs of glasses to give off a laid back urban look. For a day in the city, these rounded lens glasses are ideal for an ultimate outfit topper.
And besides, who likes sun in their eyes anyway?

I am posting and writing about a video today that I believe all women (and even men) should see. I believe the topic of this Dove Beauty Campaign video parallels with fashion because personal appearance is something everyone worries about. Though clothes and top trends are fun to experiment with in the fashion world, it is important to remember what really matters: the confidence and self-awareness of individual beauty truly makes every human being magnificent.
As I watch this video, it brings me back to the message that my mom repeatedly taught me throughout my childhood. She had been a model throughout her college years and struggled during her career of watching the people she cared about take drastic tolls to reach what they perceived as beautiful. Their perception of beauty would require unhealthy practices that left them sick and in need of help. Learning from these situations, she constantly reminded me throughout my childhood to never be overly critical, despite all of the media and outside influences that would cause me to do this anyway. We are all guilty of being critical of ourselves, and I continue to question why.
Women and men simply perceive themselves as something they are not. I, myself, am still guilty of this. In my college years, it is common for me to see the women around me flipping through magazines or online shopping, commenting on how they “wish they could look like that,” or how they will “never be as skinny” as the models. It’s time that we all take a step back and acknowledge that we are all “more beautiful than we say,” as the video puts it.
Once the video shows the results of the drawings side by side from the self-perception view compared to other perceptions, it really shows how it is such a common tendency to analyze only what we don’t like on ourselves rather than appreciating what we are thankful for. Old and young, the criticism never seems to end. There’s always something we will want to change, so why don’t we accept it and concentrate on more important things?
Another critical message to take away from this video is that others see us more beautifully than we see ourselves. Throughout the video, the ones being drawn would give themselves harsh descriptions that displayed their low confidence. When the others were asked about the individuals they had met, they were complimentary in an honest way. The ironic thing is that the more complimentary people’s drawings were more accurate to the individuals’ looks in the end.
Though not everyone can go through this experience of being drawn from a forensic artist, we can all take away from this video the bottom line message: be less critical and believe that you are beautiful. Hold confidence. It will benefit you in the way you carry yourself throughout your day-to-day life, whether it be in job interviews, classes, or just walking down the street. Most importantly, stop being so hard on yourself. Whenever you need a reminder, watch this video again and give yourself a break.

In honor of the Lollapalooza selling out, I felt that it was the perfect time to share some of my favorite sites for clothes to wear to events like this.
From festivals to concerts, I find that it is hard for girls to balance laying out appropriate yet still daring outfits for these situations.
In this post, I will show some possible article choices that should be considered for the variety of upcoming festivals this summer, as well as pointing in more of a broad direction to websites where looks like these can be obtained.
To begin, I have been searching for an outfit for the Electric Daisy Carnival that I will be attending this summer. Though this will be three days filled with electric dance music and ‘rave’ goers, I have never been the type to go all out in neon colors and fishnets. For the past few weeks, I searched sites for ideas and here were my results.
First of all, Sabo Skirt is the place to search for any type of concert apparel. As I was scrolling over the website, I fell in love with this shirt. Even in the description, Sabo quotes it as a component for the “hottest festival outfit.” It combines all the right components for a successful look: black lace, mesh, and cutouts.
For more shirt ideas, Sabo Skirt has many simple styled shirts with intricate backs that are simple yet adorable. With anything high-rise, a cute bandeau worn underneath these see through backs is fit for your night out.
As far as bottoms go for these festivals, I could not help but scan American Apparel in search for something scandalous yet subtle.
What I came across was their newly released leather skirt that comes in a variety of colors, perfect for matching up with any choice of top you desire.
If you prefer shorts to a skirt, I fell in love with their Stretch Twill Runner Short. Aside from the fact that the material is faded with a grunge-like look, the shorts are also a great choice due to the fact that they are stretchy and comfortable. Coming in blue and black, the shorts are neutral enough to be worn with a statement top, but also striking enough to be made a statement of their own. I would suggest wearing a plain colored crop top with the shorts along with your favorite pair of Converse.
I seem to always have an issue with where to put my bag as I am carrying my phone, money, and all my friends’ knick-knacks throughout the day. After years of annoyingly holding my bag, I realized a simple solution: a backpack!
The Herschel backpack brand has been growing in popularity for men and women all over my campus. I also found a backpack off of the Urban Outfitters website that I think is fun looking as well as a great accessory to any outfit that needs some sprucing up.
I hope this helps with shopping for those upcoming music events! For all those of you going to Lollapalooza, say hello to Lana del Rey for me.

Last spring I became obsessed with the high-rise shorts look. Every time I went shopping, I found myself walking into Urban Outfitters disappointed that the shorts were were clearly over priced at $70 and out of my student budget. No other stores had as authentic-looking Levi’s as Urban, and it was frustrating to consider spending over 200 dollars on three pairs (the minimum number I would buy for my summer wardrobe ahead.)
Surprisingly, my mom gave me an interesting suggestion. She told me to go to Good Will and buy a pair of pants for $10 or less. Skeptical of her idea, I went to Good Will and surprisingly found a pair of vintage Levi jeans that were around $5.
When I got home, a bottle of bleach and vinegar with a bucket were sitting on the table. I will now share with you all a ‘Do It Yourself’ instruction manual on how to bleach shorts for an Urban Outfitters look that my genius mother taught me (thank goodness.).
After purchasing a pair of jeans, try them on and lightly mark where you’d like the length to be with a pen. Take them off and cut them at the pen mark. After this is done, put a yardstick within the loopholes of the jeans. The jeans should hang down from the yardstick.
Once this is completed, fill a bucket with bleach and water. For every one-cup of bleach, fill the bucket with two cups of water. Depending on how white and dramatic you want the bleach stain to be, determine how deep you set the shorts in the liquid. Once the shorts are placed in the solution, check about every 10 minutes to see the progress of the bleach. It will work its way up the material turning the blue fabric white.
After the bleaching process is complete, place the shorts in another bucket of water and vinegar. This will halt the bleaching process. Let them soak for about 15 minutes.
After soaking in vinegar, let the shorts sit out until they are dry. At this point, wash your shorts to get the excess bleach out and dry them. Once this is complete, you have your new pair of DIY bleach shorts ready to go!
I also added a little touch of studs in the shape of a cross on the shorts. This was extremely easy to do! Just run down to your nearest Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and there will be studs that you can place on your shorts within minutes.

Another idea for creative shorts is to tie-dye them. Below was originally a pair of light yellow Forever 21 shorts that I got for $10. I went to Michael’s and got a $12 tie-dye kit. After this, I looked up a pair of shorts on the Urban Outfitter’s website that I wanted for inspiration.
For this look, I just rubber banded the shorts into three segments and dyed each corner with a different color after soaking them in a bucket of water and soda ash for 20 minutes. Once they soak in the dye for at least 6 hours (or how long the package says), rinse your shorts out with cold water. Put them in the laundry and dryer, and once they are done, stud those as well!
Get dying, darlings!

This week I decided to switch it up with an alternative approach in showing some of my favorite music videos that display unique and modern styles. Musical artists Lana del Rey and Rihanna are spot on when it comes down to outfits. They top it off with music that goes hand in hand with their fashion senses.
Along with looking at the artists for inspiration, the music itself serves as an inspiration for my personal outfit choices. I will go into more detail with specific songs later that will hopefully inspire you, as well, to have fun with what you wear while feeling good about it.
To begin, my ultimate idol and favorite artist of our time, Lana del Rey has perfected her ability to pull off vintage styles while also adding a modern twist to her appearance with more daring makeup and expensive, more modern brands.
The first music video that I cannot get enough of is “National Anthem.” Featuring A$ap Rocky, Lana’s video reenacts the story of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in which she acts as Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. In using these iconic fashion symbols of the past, Lana set the perfect scene for putting her own twist on what is a modern version of these ‘60s styles.
In the opening of the video, Lana wears a silver double-fingered ring. This style has been showing in the last few months with these types of rings being sold at stores such as Brandy Melville and Topshop. The rings vary from designs with crosses that are stretched across two fingers, or in other designs of simple bands detailed with little diamonds.
Throughout the video, Lana wears a pale blue vintage dress that is both modest and simply stunning. With baggy t-shirt length sleeves, the longer length of the dress goes beautifully with her more daring make up consisting of smoky eyes and cat eye styled eye liner that gives off a Cleopatra look.
In another scene, Lana wears high wasted white dress pants with a tucked in low- cut long sleeve that is folded into the bottoms as it tucks in. She has a way of balancing seductive cuts of clothing with more appropriate apparel in the remainder of the outfit to make the overall outfit flattering and not over aggressive.
Enough of Lana; let’s move on to the lovely Rihanna.
Though in the past I have not necessarily favored Rihanna’s music, I believe 2012 began to shine Rihanna in a new light after releasing her album, Unapologetic.
In her song “We Found Love” featuring DJ Calvin Harris, Rihanna tells a story of her crazy love while looking fabulous in every scene. Due to her constant outfit changes, I will highlight the outfit that I loved the most throughout the video.
In a scene in which she and her lover are at an indoor skate park, Rihanna wears a dark blue, skin-tight cropped t-shirt decorated with silver tips on the collar with an opening in the back. For bottoms, she wears a high-rise black skirt with garter straps and black tights. The outfit is playful yet chic and outgoing.
I give props to these women who balance their music tastes and fashion styles.

In a city with many cultures, practices, and people, I thought it was simply necessary to feature a unique and daring type of style this week to keep the diverse consistency alive: chic fashion.
I have not encountered much of this specific style in my past years of observation among city life in San Francisco and LA, though I have seen much more of it present in Chicago. No one displays this look better than one of my good friends and extremely fashionable students at Loyola University of Chicago, Alex Schmidt.
Whether it is for attending a morning class or going out at night, Schmidt always looks her best with complementing accessories, coordinating colors, and outfit layouts that always are bold yet subtle.
For this post, Alex wore four outfits that display her main favorite looks underneath the chic spectrum.
First, Alex wore a more casual chic ensemble. For her top, Alex wore a shimmered knit sweater that consists of silver and black stripes. Over the sweater is a light leather blue vest with a silver zipper that matches perfectly with the silver on the sweater underneath.

As her bottoms, the leather jeggings serve as a staple that bring the overall outfit together. The tuxedo-style on the jeggings also incorporates one of the top styles that have been popular in the last few winter months. These jeggings look great with a pair of high boots or heels for going out.

For her main complimenting accessory, Schmidt wore a small clutch with a handle detailed with skull and diamond emblems on the brass-knuckles handle. This accessory adds an edge to the outfit; the skulls and diamonds are both extremely chic symbols, as well.

In her second outfit, Alex wore a casual yet more-dressy outfit that could be worn in a concert environment or for going out. With high-rise shorts, a mini black leather corset and tights, the outfit is topped off with a pair of black boot heels that dress the overall outfit up.

As far as the accessories in this outfit layout, Alex wore a gold chain necklace intertwined with pearls with a cross as its main pendant. She also added a sheer white tethered-back blazer that adds a bit more of attitude on top of the leather corset she wore.

Overall, this outfit gives off a kind of rock star- look that combines all the right components: pearls, leather, and a Madonna-like rebel look.
Alex laid out two more formal ensembles for going out or for an event where looking your best is simply necessary.

In the first outfit, Alex went for bold. With a neon yellow blazer and hot pink heels, Schmidt then toned down the outfit with a black lightly pleated skirt with a gold studded belt topped off with a silver buckle on its middle.

Though the blazer is neon yellow (which is usually associated with concerts, partying, etc.), the material along with the gold zippers makes the blazer appropriate to be wearable for a variety of events.

For her top, she wore a grey colored tank top that offered enough neutrality for the neon colors to shine.

Black and gold studded accessories were worn on her wrist for some sassy additions to the outfit.

Lastly she wore a black and tan tie-dye dress accompanied with a black and gold belt around her waste, nylon socks worn high over a pair of black boot heels, and a gold bag to add an extra touch of daring style.

A black and gold watch was added as an accessory to tie in the gold studs that are detailed on the shoulders of Schmidt’s dress.

The layout of this outfit is simple yet classy; it’s daring enough to make a statement but toned down enough to be appropriate for wearing to a fancy school event or something of the sort.
I have had fun exploring the world of chic fashion, and hope to be exposed to more of it in the future. I love the fun colors, studs and crosses that make up the chic style and its top trends.
Last but not least, thank you Alex for sharing your closet and beauty for the blog.
Now, for spring styles…

Vintage styles have begun to flourish in the world of fashion. From hair bows to high-rise jeans, it is needless to say that a stylish blast from the past is occurring.
The greatest benefit of these new trends is the fact that a thrift shop is a general location for vintage heaven. The cheaper the prices mean the older the clothing. The older the clothing means the more authentic the look. It is a win- win situation for all.
Even modern day artists such as Macklemore are taking their looks back with thrift shop apparel such as fur coats and animal print. Macklemore even features a whole song dedicated to this ideal and style titled “Thrift Shop” that’s made it to the top of the charts these last few months. The Mackelmore has further promoted this rather unique style of vintage to emerge into acceptance.
Though thrift stores offer these looks, modern day stores such as American Apparel, Nasty Gal and Obey brand are also in the running for providing modern day fashionistas with the classic clothing they crave.

As a personal favorite accessory, I will begin with the bow. Available in leather, satin and velvet, American Apparel offers a variety of designs and styles of the bow that can be worn in a casual or dressed up manner.
One of my favorite fashions worn with the bow is a curled or natural hairstyle pulled back in a ponytail with the bow clipped in right above the rubber band. Another cute way to wear this would be to clip the bow below a sock or messy bun.
Though bows have recently come into fashion, they were commonly worn in the late ‘70’s, around the time that Grease was released. This preppy ‘Pink Ladies’ type of fashion is starting to increasingly show in today’s top styles. Aside from bows, this style includes baby pink lipstick, spandex leggings and scrunchies.
Secondly, a trend that is increasingly showing in stores such as Urban Outfitters and Nastygal website: band/ graphic t-shirts. From Nirvana and Blondie to the Beatles and Iron Maiden, these classic musicians are appearing everywhere on the clothing of the youth.
For an edgy look with a graphic band t-shirt, wear bright colored lipstick with statement jewelry such as a rusty gold necklace or your favorite pair of hoops. Corduoroys also compliment these shirts with their ‘rock’ style consistency.

This shirt was bought as Crossroads Trading Co. Again, thrift and recycled clothing stores are a jackpot destination for the cheapest and best items.
Last but not least are pleated skirts. This goes back to the ‘50’s when styles were classy but daring. Dressing properly was priority, and high school apparel of starter jackets and bowling shoes ruled casual styles of the youth.

Today, pleated skirts are common in bright colors and in varieties of floral patterns. The skirt displayed here is from the Urban Outfitters Outlet store. For going out for the day in the city, wear this skirt with a pair of your favorite tights and a neutral colored sweater tucked in.

I grew up in California where even mild winters would provide a time period when hibernation on weekends became acceptable. Sixty-degree weather called for a sweatshirt, snow was unheard of, and rain caused a damper on the day. In other words, you could only imagine the struggle of moving to Chicago and the weather changes I have faced at my new home thus far.
My first weekend going out in Chicago with snow on the ground left me in awe that humans actually dare to step outside in the night hours when frostbite seems like a likely outcome. After a few weekends of over-dressing and under-dressing for the weather, I finally found combinations of outfits that left me content with my choices. With the help of my friends Hailey Peterson and Ernesto Hidalgo (photographed below), we crafted together a basic lay out of what to wear when going out to parties, bars or anywhere else you travel to party when the weather is not necessarily working in your favor.
This post is aimed towards my fellow classmates who come from places that have never confronted this extreme weather on a day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year basis. It is not impossible to look your best, even when the temperature is an unavoidable burden to easy outfit planning. So don’t give up!
My first tip to all you Chi-Town girls: stock up on those blouses! I used to think that blouses seemed like a rather elderly-like article of clothing. After being exposed to Chicago fashion, I learned that blouses offer a piece of clothing that is classy, favorable in the fact that it is long sleeved, and most importantly it can be dressed up or down. Below, Hailey dressed up her sea foam green blouse before heading out for the night with a pair of H&M braided gold hoop earrings. The earrings add a nice touch to the blouse with the complimenting colors, in addition to the Lana del Rey- like look of the hoops. It really dresses up the blouse nicely. A leather jacket thrown over the blouse will be the finishing touch.

With this MAC Saint Germain lipstick, the baby pink color goes nicely with the sea foam color of the blouse. With the neutral- colored jeans, the pastels are like the center point of the canvas. The lipstick assists in making the blouse more of a bold outfit. You can never go wrong with MAC lipstick; it is a staple for a night out in the city.

Another winter- adjusted outfit that can also put your summer clothing to use is a braided mesh sweater. Underneath, a corset or lace bandeau can create a better going-out look. High-rise jeans compliment this outfit with warmth in addition to a more reserved look that is not too revealing, though the sweater only has a shorter article underneath it.

Coming from Florida, Ernesto has adjusted to the weather wardrobe changes quite nicely. His job at AllSaints enables him to stay up on the latest trends. His outfit photographed below is mainly composed of AllSaints articles of clothing.
First, Ernesto is wearing an AllSaints button up with patterns of high-rise buildings and super heroes scattered over it. Though the pattern is funky, the shirt’s neutral colors along with his Chinos balance out the look. For a more urban look, Ernesto has the shirt all the way buttoned up.

As far as accessories go, Ernesto has mastered his brands. His gold Michael Kors watch with black and white detailing is both professional looking and applicable to fit with a variety of outfit layouts.

His Salvatore Ferragamo shoes with Cole Haan socks compliment the rest of his outfit with its funk-like consistency, both fashionable and daring. Basically, the whole outfit is a statement in itself.

Lastly, my personal favorite piece of his outfit is his AllSaints coat. The faded greypeacoat with black buttons folds two ways, but also looks just as nice unbuttoned.

I hope these tips and ideas will assist those who are still figuring out how to dress for hitting the night out in Chicago.

Although the weather just got down to the 30’s and 40’s in Rome, the Italians have been in full on Winter gear for weeks now.
A typical Chicago winter outfit consists of a North Face jacket, jeans, and boots for a guy or a Parka and an Ugg-like boot for girls.
That is not a thing here in Rome.
Donne – Women
Italians never sacrifice fashion for function. Although I am not the biggest fan of these Shiny jackets, they are quite a big deal here.

This puffy, shiny style can be easily found in the states as well. Forever 21 has many shiny jacket options.

As for Winter footwear, Carhartt and traditional Timberland boots are surprisingly popular for women, and seen way more frequently than anything UGG like.

UOMI – MEN
Timberland and Carhartt are popular brands for men between the ages of 20 and 25 in the winter. In Rome, Carharrt and Timberland are on premier shopping streets next to other popular designers. They definitely have a different brand image than they do in the States. Fortunately for you American men, Timberland and Carhartt are considerably less expensive to purchase, than those buying in Italy.
A hat like this is commonly seen on the street.

When wearing any kind of hat or jacket here in Rome, it is important to have one with a logo. In my opinion, young adult male’s are more into logos than men in America.
It is also the Italian thing to ALWAYS wear a scarf. A simple black one is always chic and easy.

As November ends and the weather quickly drops, it is safe to finally say “Happy Holidays” and “Tis the Season!” In the past few weeks we’ve managed our stress with overeating those Thanksgiving leftovers and happily crossing assignments off of our to do lists. With just a few weeks left in our semester, 2012 is coming to a close, and I am here to suggest end it fashionably!
I’ll precede the rest of this post by saying it is not necessary to walk the streets like a fashion model. Be comfortable in your everyday wear, but make it work. Coming from Los Angeles, California, I am the first to run for the heavy coats and thick jackets. During these cold months, it is easy to get caught up in dark, frumpy wear just to stay warm. With that said, there are many fashion options to stay both warm and trendy during the winter.
One of the common styles I’ve seen around campus is pairing a skirt or dress with tights and boots. This combo is always a win during the wintertime. Any other time of the year, it is simply unacceptable to have a really cute dress dulled down by the nonessential accessory that tights can be. However, when I wake up and see that it is 26oF outside, there is no way my legs are going uncovered, despite how much I want to flaunt my new H&M dress purchased on Black Friday.
Like I mentioned earlier, it is easy to get caught in all black, frumpy clothing. It is important to remember that little accessories can go a long way. Today I decided to wear my black skinny jeans with my black winter coat and charcoal gray rain boots. I would have symbolized walking depression if I added my gray scarf to the mix. With a yellow shirt and peachy-pink scarf, I avoided blending in with the dark clouds above.
Lastly and possibly the most importantly, fashion is all about your attitude! You must be confident in yourself and the clothes you wear.
Happy Styling and Happy Holidays!

Looking for the right barber shop can be a bit like looking for the right church. You aren’t just looking for a great haircut; you’re looking for a great community, somewhere that feels right, somewhere that won’t just give you what you want, but what you need even if you don’t realize it. Somewhere that, when you walk in, you think: “I’m home.”
So one day I told my boss I wanted a haircut. He told me all five male staffs of the high-end Michigan Ave store we worked at (including himself) get their haircuts at a barbershop in Lincoln Park called Gabby’s. It was a bit out of the way from where I lived and where I usually commuted, but everyone at work had awesome hair. I thought why not.
My first time there, I waited an hour and was almost late for work. It was Christmas season, so the seasonal jazz music playing in the background calmed me down. There were plenty of magazines to read and people to watch to keep me occupied. When I was done, even my boss told me that my tardiness was worth it.
The place itself is very simple. It is narrow and has high-ceilings, none of the furniture match, and the walls were green (which I recently learned is a feature of typical, old-fashioned barbershops).
The atmosphere is very laidback. When you come in you write your name on the chalkboard, and then just wait until you’re called by whoever is available. If you know any of the five barbers well (and you think they know your hair well), you could write their initials by your name so you’ll be guaranteed that they will cut your hair.
The first barber I had there was Wayne, whose station is at the far end of the room. We had the typical barber-client conversation, talking about things like what I do and where I’m from. We just talked as he skillfully cut my hair, and we got so engaged that I forgot I was getting my hair cut. All I knew was after around 7 minutes, I looked into the mirror and saw a different person; I couldn’t remember the last time I really liked my haircut.
I paid the $15 (cash only!), but I still felt the urge to tip. Having no change for a tip, I gave him chocolate instead. He appreciated it.
I must say the haircut I got at Gabby’s was the one that made me receive the most compliments on my hair I’ve ever had, and I didn’t even need to direct or pay attention to what the barber was doing. Gabby’s became my little secret (well, from Loyola students at least. Gabby’s is always packed with a long line of clients.)
I took my two best friends to get haircuts, and from there a tradition was born. We look forward to the day we needed to go to the barber (it’s probably equivalent to a day at the nail salon for girls, where you bond and go home feeling like a new person), and afterwards we grab a bite at the nearby burger place called The Counter. We write our three names in a particular order (Max, Adi, Wes) in hopes that the barbers will eventually notice us (and we would joke that someday they’d call us “the trio” and would ask us if we wanted the “usual”).
Sadly that tradition was short-lived. Max moved to Germany and my hair never had the same growing-schedule as Weston’s (in total, we were only able to do that “tradition” two times). But after my eighth visit I did start to feel a sense of community. Every now and then I would bring other friends.
The barber’s started to remember me, and so far I have had all but Greg cut my hair. Wayne remembered that I once tipped him with chocolate, R.J. remembers that I have Indonesian heritage (and told me so many insights about the world that I gained a whole new opinion about people growing up in the military), David sometimes comments on how fast my hair grows (“I thought I just cut your hair?”) and Kathy thanked me for bringing in someone new (my friend Ben, who with all his Southern politeness, thanked Kathy for giving him the best haircut he has ever had).
Now I am in Rome studying abroad, and I think they might have all forgotten me already, but I am missing one of the places that helped Chicago establish itself as my home. I look back nostalgically to the times when I would wait in line along with other college students, business men, old retired men and even little boys to get their haircut; the times when I’m not too preoccupied about how my hair will end up looking that I could either have a meaningful conversation with the barber or watch the dog (yes, they have a dog) play around freely in the shop.
But here in Rome, I have a barber just around the corner who speaks not one word of English, and he will have a whole story to himself. Stay tuned for my next article and video about my Italian barber, “The Barber of Balduina.”

Chicago weather is crazy: one day it’s below 40 degrees and raining and by the weekend it’s 70-some degrees and sunny. And, yes, it is November.
All global warming worries aside, there are bigger worries for this wacky weather. What do you wear? How can you remix summer clothes into fall clothes? What about fall clothes into winter clothes? Summer clothes into winter clothes? Can that be done?
The trick is this: layer, layer, layer. Layer patterns you wouldn’t normally consider putting together. Try new color combinations. If you usually gravitate towards pink but don’t know how to make that work for winter, try it in a cool leather jacket. Wear your chambray button up under a cozy crew neck sweater. Add a scarf, suede booties and an army jacket (all staples for fall), and– a ha!– the pieces you’ve been wearing over and over suddenly look and feel brand new.
And when you’re uninspired by your own wardrobe, look to others for inspiration. The blogosphere is full of style bloggers, many with affordable options. Here are some of my favorites:

Good Life for Less
Cupcakes and Cashmere (BONUS! She has tons of recipes, too!)

As the breeze of the Windy City begins to sweep its way over the last traces of warm sunshine, the beautifully colored leaves fall along with temperatures. To cope with the temperature drop, individuals of the greater Chicago area have begun to take on their winter wardrobes, composed of studs, acid washes, and knee-high socks. These upcoming cold months will hold game-changing trends, making this season’s fashion style one for the books.
Coming from Seattle, Chicago resident Hailey Porter has already mastered the ideal closet for the weather. To start off, while putting together outfits, her two jean jackets seemed to serve as a staple fit for every outfit and pattern of clothing.

Her first jean jacket is acid washed, worn with an edgy, striped blouse underneath. This type of outfit could be worn at any event from spending a night downtown, to throwing on with a pair of leggings for class. Her second jean jacket is made of a typical blue jean material with retro fabric sewn in at the arms for a jean-vest-over-sweater look. This jacket served to offer more of a street-style vibe, worn with TopShop hoop earrings and an Urban Outfitters beanie.

Secondly, Porter wore knee high socks, adding a fashionable yet functional element for warmth. Knee high socks can also be worn scrunched above your favorite pair of heels (or Jeffrey Campbells as photographed) for cold evenings out on the town.

Third, a symbol that has been trending all year, carrying on to this season. Crosses have made appearances in everything from apparel to jewelry. Porter is wearing a chunky TopShop layered cross necklace, dressing up her oversized sweater with a pair of high waisted blue jeans.

Black boots seem to remain a necessity carrying over from last season. This winter, the popular look of studs or oversized buckles on boots adds an additional jewelry-like element to an outfit to further accessorize. As always, Jeffrey Campbells also continue to expand in popularity. Offered in basically every color, Jeffrey Campbells can be worn with any outfit due to their ability to be dressed up or down based on the outfit they’re worn with.
The high-low skirt from summer apparel is still fit for fall outfits with a pair of leggings or high socks.
Overall, the cold months ahead will offer a time to layer up and finally be able to wear the boots we had bought and anticipated wearing for the many weeks of humidity and extreme temperatures from summer. Being warm doesn’t have to mean throwing on a North Face jacket; we can save that for later on when December and January approach.
Style on, ladies and gentlemen.

Italy is home to brands like Valentino, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo, Bottega Veneta and countless other brands. Italy is especially known for leather and high quality goods sporting the “Made in Italy” tag.
I have selected one fall trend for women and one fall trend for men that I see the Italians working on a daily basis.
Donne (Ladies), have you thought about wedge or platform sneakers?
For those of you who like the look of high-top sneakers and the fashion of heels, this trend is for you. At first I didn’t know how I felt about these platform sneakers, but they have grown on me. I have seen women wear them with skinny jeans so the entire shoe is visible and I have seen them worn with longer flared jeans so that only the front of the shoe shows.
If you want to look especially European, try these traditional Hogan brand tennis shoes with a modest wedge.

Where Can You Buy This Trend in Chicago?
Uomi (Men), have you thought about wearing bracelets?
You should. Bracelets are a common Italian male trend. I have seen men in suits, guys in casual wear and of all ages wearing one or two different styles of bracelets.
The first style is braided. Typically the braided bracelets are thin and made of strings in a variety of colors. You can wear one solo braided bracelet or layer them up.
Leather bracelets are the other style. You can wear a long piece of leather that wraps around your wrist a couple times or have a loose fitting solo leather band around your wrist.

Hello LUChameleon readers!
I absolutely adore fashion. There are new trends, styles, and designers everyday that use a vision and some fabric to express a passion. It really is amazing to see how fashion is forever changing and evolving, yet finds a way to always reference the past. For example, I know plenty of people who get excited about their thrift shopping extravaganzas. “Vintage” is totally in these days, yet so is the modern, cutting edge look many love. Anyone can choose their style and people can shop in whatever store they choose. Though every person’s closet differentiates in style, everybody has jeans.
Jeans are timeless. Jeans are vintage and at the same time, modernly chiq! Recently, I’ve noticed a rabidly growing fad specifically with colored jeans. Simply put, they are perfect for every person and any occasion (except for the Emmy’s which is another conversation completely). Falling under The Three “C”s of fashion – convenient, comfortable, and cute – colored jeans are working their way to the top of the fashion-necessities totem pole.

Photo by Lydia DeCoud/ The Chameleon
Above, Lindsay Maher models her moss green jeans. Hanging in my closet I have a pair of red jeans as well as a bright green pair for when I’m really trying to shake things up. Lets not forget that gray is a color too! I love my gray skinny jeans. These are perfect for any occasion.
Everyone should invest in at least one pair of color jeans. I’ve seen bright blue, hot pink, pale yellow, burgundy, and many more and not once has the person looked bad. Wear them with heels and a nice top and be ready for a fancy dinner event. On the other hand sneakers or flats perfectly accessorize colored jeans for class or just a day out in the city. Whether your shirts are all black and white or you own only all crazy patterns, I guarantee the right color is out there to suit your fashion needs.
At the end of the day, color may not be some people’s thing. To that, I still beg of you, at least own a pair of black jeans! Talk about timeless and classy!
Anna’s back and ready to show you some new fashion ideas straight from the runways to your closets! Check out this week’s video version of Friday Fashion Spectrum

Hello and welcome back to the Chameleon’s fashion blog!
It’s been too long since all of you have had the chance to read a piece from any of the bloggers.
Let’s get things started.
Last year I concentrated on high end and couture fashion, and yes I will continue in the same vein yet again.
For my first blog of the year I’d like to share with you two designers that I discovered this summer and whose designs I have fallen in love with: Paule Ka and Tony Ward.
They are two of the most talented designers I have come across. Paule Ka is a French designer who has dressed the likes of Carla Bruni (France’s former first lady). Tony Ward is an American designer who has dressed Guiliana Rancic and Kelly Osborne.
Paule Ka has a collection that is very ladylike, so don’t be surprised if your outfit has one or two bows on it. But don’t worry ladies these are not little girl bows, but sophisticated additions to an already incredibly well-tailored outfit. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a modern day Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly I highly recommend you check him out.
Tony Ward, while still maintaining an elegant touch to his designs, is more forward and risqué. His designs this season have a lot of thigh high slits and strategically placed transparent material. You’ll still feel like a lady, but one who’s willing to take risks.
Check them out online and be inspired by their designs.

Need a study break and want to catch up with the most popular articles, videos, and blogs we had this year? Here’s our mascot, Charlie, with his top 20 picks from this year! (In no particular order.)
Back in February, copy editor Andrew Kletzien wrote an opinion piece entitled “A Letter to Catholic Apologists.” The piece was a commentary regarding several sexual assault incidents involving children in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Andrew’s article invoked much discussion from Catholic students on campus.
In March, staff writer Erika Vigen offered her opinion about the prospective USGA bottled water ban on the Loyola campus in her “environmentally friendly” commentary entitled “Forever Thirsty.”
Every Friday throughout the school year, our Friday Fashion Spectrum bloggers have kept you in the know with all the latest style tips, deals, and trends, as well as beauty/makeup/accessories advice, what NOT to wear, and where to shop on a college student budget.
In one of the very first articles published in the Chameleon, staff writer Barbara Crowley interviews several anons about their feelings towards the taboo subject of sex in “Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby.”
In February, staff writer Audrey Kelley produced one of our most popular multimedia pieces featuring different Loyola students and their opinions about feminism and what it means to be a feminist.
Every Tuesday throughout the school year, Chameleon blogger Audrey Kelley produced “Tattoo Tuesday,” a blog featuring Loyola students and their tattoo art. In the blog, Audrey also explores different aspects of tattoo culture. Readers are encouraged to interact with Audrey using the comment section of the website and share their own tattoo stories.
In February, copy editor Brittney Rooney explored the hidden meaning behind the “LGBTQA” acronym, and what each label of the acronym personally meant to those people who identify as said label.
Staff writer Barbara Crowley follows up with her “Let’s Talk About Sex” article by interviewing more anons for another article about the act of masturbation. Is doing the dirty with yourself really so dirty?
In March, LIFT-Chicago, a student organization at Loyola held its annual “Poverty Awareness Week.” Photo Editor Kevin Bautista spoke with Nick Passarelli, Public Relations Manager of the LIFT Uptown office to get an inside look at Poverty Awareness programming and the LIFT movement’s significance.
Staff writer Audrey Kelly produced another “environmentally friendly” video this semester, in which she interviews different Loyola students and the different ways they practice “going green” on campus.
Back in November, copy editor Andrew Kletzien writes a commentary about the Bible and its origins in the early history and spreading of Christianity and why what you hear may not always be what you believe.
In February, Chameleon staff writer Dimitri Plikas profiled Loyola student organization Cru, and took an in depth look at how the students who are involved in Cru “go forth and set the world on fire.”
In March, after finishing the mandatory online e-Toke checkup program, staff writer Paul Gusiewski wrote a commentary piece concerning Loyola’s stance on marijuana and its “anti-marijuana message.”
Following copy editor Andrew Kletzien’s article about the recent outbreak of sex abuse scandals in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Loyola student (and Catholic) Emily Sammon penned this commentary.
In February, Photo Editor Kevin Bautista profiled The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy (CUERP). Kevin goes inside the heart of Loyola’s green initiative, and explores the different ways CUERP fuels the university’s drive for sustainability.
In March, Multimedia Editors Sarah Murray and Marie Janzen produced a video entitled “An Inside Look at Loyola’s Dining Cuisines and Services.” Several Loyola students were interviewed about their opinions of Loyola’s dining services.
In April, Editor-in-Chief Kim De Guzman wrote about her experiences using the popular new dating website, OkCupid. She explores the website’s different features and the benefits of online dating on OkCupid.
On Wednesdays throughout the school year, an anonymous Chameleon staff writer published the “Not-So-Whisper-Wednesdays” blog, a sex blog about…well, all things sex.
In honor of our namesake reptile, in February, Multimedia Editor Sarah Murray went on an adventure to a reptile store in Evanston to find a real live chameleon (YES, A REAL CHAMELEON) and learn about it.
In April, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama visited the Loyola campus to deliver a speech on “Interfaith Collaboration.” Editor-in-Chief Kim De Guzman recapped His Holiness’ speech and students’ reactions to it.

Looking for some cute and classy outfits to celebrate summer? Take a break from studying for your upcoming finals to explore the wonders of ModCloth.
The online collection started as a vintage-only company, but it has since expanded to include independent designers as well. One of the reasons ModCloth founder Susan Koger decided to extend the merchandise to include indie designed apparel was not only to support other designers and small businesses, but also to cater to the ModCloth customer. It’s heartbreaking when a knock out vintage dress isn’t in your size, so opening the company to indie designers allows for customers’ access to an assortment of sizes.
Customer input keeps ModCloth fresh while also preserving its vintage reputation. The company relies on Facebook (where I first saw its ad), Twitter and its blog to stay in constant contact with ModCloth lovers. ModCloth even has a Be the Buyer feature on its website. With this program, ModCloth buyers and browsers can vote to help ModCloth choose which designs get created.
Susan Koger was recently featured in the December 2011 edition of Cosmopolitan in an article about up-and-coming female entrepreneurs. She started as a vintage aficionado who collected unique pieces (even items that weren’t in her size!). When her collection became so extensive that it was overflowing from her dorm room, Koger decided to start an online shop with her boyfriend (now husband) Eric Koger. After the pair received such a positive response, they began to branch out, to increase their inventory to not only vintage pieces, but also vintage-inspired looks. Now ModCloth is a huge company of over 275 employees.
Be careful- ModCloth can become an obsession. Their clothing, shoes and accessories vary in style and price (and there are always sales!). Right now, I can’t stop scrolling through their creative maxi dress and retro swimsuit collections.
Another interesting asset of ModCloth is its apartment section. ModCloth has everything from décor to office supplies to cameras and books. They even have pet accessories.
Each item ModCloth carries, to me, tells a story. ModCloth’s pieces are typically unconventional. The designers of each outfit, whether it’s vintage or indie-designed, really know their customers. They have intricately developed looks that fit different moods and personalities. Sometimes your look can describe you better than your words can; somehow ModCloth highlights its customers’ most vibrant qualities with a careful selection of perfect fabrics and flattering styles and, most of all, a relentless dedication to giving fashion a voice.

When people hear “Japanese Style,” the first thing that often comes to mind is the vibrant, quirky and outlandish street style that dominate the streets of Harajuku (or the Los Angeles Convention Center during AnimeCon).
Over Easter Break I was actually lucky enough to visit Tokyo, the city of my dreams, even though it was only a four-hour layover. My friend Erin was kind enough to skip her first day of school to take me around and show me parts of the city she thought would interest me.
Of course, she took me to Harajuku and Shibuya, the famous fashion epicenter of Tokyo (a city that is by itself a fashion capital).
The best part is, far before I arrived in these two districts of Tokyo, everywhere around me people were so well put together. For you fashion bloggers out there, you know how if you want to make a Sartorialist style post about fashion on the street, it takes sometime to hunt down? Well in Tokyo, the hard part was having to choose the best outfits; everyone put in so much care and attention to detail.
The verdict, it wasn’t at all outlandish, but it was vibrant and quirky. The trends I saw there were nude tones, lace and layers. The overall look was delicate, romantic and modern. I felt I was flipping through the pages of a fashion spread in Nylon or Vogue. Here are my top four favorite looks:

Let’s take a risk into the inventive and edgy world of Maison De LaCour. Julius “JuJu” LaCour has created a sexy mysterious atmosphere in his fashion, one that is perfectly daring. His precise attention to detail helps him design fantastic pieces that continue to push the endless possibilities of fashion.
LaCour realized at the age of 12 that fashion was the world he wanted to be in. He grew up in New Orleans, where money was tight for his family. He spent his days glued to fashion magazines where he studied the newest styles of Dolce and Gabbana and Giorgio Armani. “The style back

then was the distressed look with distressed jeans and I wanted the same thing but I couldn’t afford it, so I learned how to do it on my own.”
LaCour played around with old jeans and shirts to recreate the styles that mesmerized him. He admits that at first he didn’t know anything about sewing, so his first few creations were held together by fabric glue. He later taught himself how to use a sewing machine, and furthered his education at the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago. His hunger for learning about the intricacies of fashion is what keeps him motivated every day. “I love to figure out new ways to create minimum bulk in the fabrics so that it is form fitting and accentuates the body in the best way.”
Two years ago, LaCour created Maison De LaCour to showcase his fashion lifestyle for both men and women. He wants to remind people that fashion is not just for the women of the world; men too can

strive to be fashionable and bold. “I just think men’s fashion in America is boring.” He seeks to rejuvenate menswear by creating styles that not only he would love to wear, but also to create statement-striking styles for men. But his attention does not run shy from his magnificent women’s designs. Maison De LaCour showcases truly courageous styles. LaCour ultimately created this “maison” for “the person who dares to live outside of the box and loves to be comfortable in what he or she is wearing. It’s for that unique and fearless person.”
From fabric glue to intricately sewn masterpieces, JuJu LaCour brings his edgy flare to the world of fashion.

Anyone who caught the Season 5 premiere of Mad Men this Sunday was in for a stylish treat.
The men’s wardrobes were polished and classy, as usual, but the real showstoppers this week were the ladies of Mad Men. The office secretaries caught my eye with their brightly colored, high necked dresses and professional but fun black and white frilled tops. But let’s focus on the style of some of Mad Men’s leading ladies:
Peggy: Peggy’s former feminine work outfits have slowly transformed throughout the seasons as she’s moved up in the office. In Sunday’s episode, Peggy wore a black, boxy top, giving her a powerful presence in the workplace among her male coworkers. I was happy to see that Peggy was able to incorporate her sweet feminine side at Don’s party; she wore an orange and yellow floral dress with a beautiful neckline.

Megan: I missed the last season of Mad Men, so seeing Megan’s fashionable choices was a pleasant surprise. Megan embraced her youth with a relaxed, long bob hair style, geometric patterns and color blocks, and mini dresses. To the office, Megan wore a salmon mini dress with a long geometric printed sweater to match. Megan also focused on newer 1960s styles with her orange, green and white dress complete with crisp white gloves. Megan’s most memorable outfit, though, had to be the black go-go inspired dress she wore for Don’s birthday. The trapeze mini dress is embellished with sheer, butterfly sleeves and a sparkly rhinestone collar. Singing to Don in this little number was her idea of the perfect birthday gift.

Joan: As a character and fashion icon, Joan has always been and will always be my favorite. She flawlessly works with her voluptuous curves to create a gorgeous, eye-catching look every time she’s in a scene. In Sunday’s episode, Joan visited the office for the first time after having her baby. Joan entered the office adorned in a magenta form- fitting dress with a black flower design. Her choice perfectly complements her figure with its waist-defining skinny belt, generous but classy neckline, and black-beaded bedazzled sleeves. Some may say Joan went over the top with this look, but I think it gave her dominance at the office. Matched with her undeniable poise, Joan’s outfit certainly made her stand out.
The main reason I watch Mad Men is to admire the classy sophistication and elegance of 1960s style. Costume designer Janie Bryant gives each character a different style edge that illuminates the character’s personality.
Forget the juicy plot line and elusive characters, Mad Men’s fashion has got me hooked.
Mad Men airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.

Akira, a Chicago based brand, hosted their annual show at the Lyric Opera House on March 21. Akira has its own labels and features designers like the Original Penguin, Sam Edelman, House of Harlow, Jeffrey Campbell, and many others.
Erin Martin, of The Voice, started off a show with a performance.

The dress code was “smart attire.” I wore nude platforms, lilac pants and a multicolor batwing Missoni top. My friend Drew wore a blue and white-checkered shirt, a grey blazer and bright shorts.
Other guests wore cocktail dresses or full suits. Some guests pushed trends or showcased their unique style.

Ford models worked vibrant pieces on the extensive runway. The runway was almost W shaped, and models took different routes on the runway. This is a unique approach to the prototypical runway experience.

Many of us want to stand out, but we find ourselves wearing the same thing as Sally who sits next to us in class. Everything is just so similar to each other. The prints, the colors, the silhouette, are all similar. You don’t want to blend in with the crowd and go unnoticed, but that can be difficult.
So what is a fashionable girl to do?
Stop following the trends!
If everyone is wearing big fur vests, do you really have to wear big fur vests? If everyone loves skinny jeans with a blazer do you want to wear it too?

Start taking risks with your wardrobe. You don’t have to adhere to what everyone is wearing. Become the girl that everyone wants to copy. If you see something a bit crazy, buy it, and make it fabulous!
Fashion is an expression of who you are. It should reflect you as an individual and not you trying to be a fashion clone of someone else.
These slide and toucan bird shoes by Kobi Levi are a great example of quirky fashion that makes you stand out!

Photo By Adilla Menayang/The Chameleon. Adilla compiles a list of products he believes every man should have for the upcoming seasons.

Seems like this year Chicago decided to skip one whole season entirely; not long after being bundled up in parkas, we are free to roam the beaches barefoot in tank tops. You know what that means: the more clothes come off, the more skin shows.
For every man who loves to pamper for himself, he will know that the best accessory one could ever have for the warmer seasons (other than a pair of classic Ray-Bans) is a nice, healthy glow. You also want to smell nice, you know, because when it’s summer you want to be around friends more often. So I compiled a list of products I recommend every man should have for the summer.
Marc Jacobs Men: I love woody scents, but they are often too heavy for spring and summer. Marc Jacobs Men is an exception though. It is lightly woody and spicy, and more floral. I feel patriotic when I wear it because it contains Indonesian patchouli. The scent is feminine enough that all you girlfriends out there can steal a spritz or two as well.
Lab Series Night Repair Lotion: I used it throughout the winter because I have very dry skin, and it visibly reduces any past acne scars or any other form of discoloration. It is a little bit to oily though, and very pricey, so I use it sparingly.
Lab Series Multi-Action Face Wash: This is a great scrub. It gives me a jolt of energy when I wash my face in the morning, and my skin feels squeaky clean. Again, I don’t use it too often because it is expensive, but more importantly it could dry out the skin. I use it around twice a week and I’ve been told I have soft cheeks, hehehe.
Jack Black Pit Boss Antiperspirant: Spending $18 for deodorant may seem crazy, I used to think that way too, until I got blisters and allergic reactions and stains on many of my white t-shirts because I used the usual drug store brands. I have sensitive skin, so Jack Black’s Pit Boss was the perfect choice for me. The company says that they use minimum amounts of aluminum, and it is also fragrance free. This makes it perfect for wearing any cologne you want because then your deodorant and perfume won’t have to battle each other.
Fatboy: The name says it all… not. This is hair product, and it’s rare and beautiful. It gives your hair that out-of-bed look and the pliability of clay. It smells awesome too, and it’s not greasy.
Cosmetic Lad Facial Moisturizer by LUSH: Hands down, this is the best moisturizer I’ve ever bought. I’ve been through a long line of facial moisturizers, many giving me spots, and the milder ones left my skin still rough and dry. I’ve even had a facial moisturizer that gave me red rashes on my face. Cosmetic Lad is mild, smells like a camping (a mixture of trail mix and forest), and even works for your hair! It has lavender, chamomile and aloe to soothe irritations, and rich cocoa butter to moisturize.
R&B Hair Finisher by LUSH: This is also one of my favourites. My friend Janelle recommended it to me. I didn’t even know what a hair finisher was, but it is like a leave-in conditioner. Just dab and smooth all over your damp hair after you shower, and you’ll have nice, luscious locks. It smells like oatmeal and avocado, sometimes I wish I could eat my hair after I use it.
Breath of Fresh Air Facial Toner by LUSH: I think you’re starting to see a trend. I love LUSH, they’re a socially and environmentally responsible company. They even stick the name, date and face of the person who made your jar or bottle of product so you can appreciate it more. Most of all, they make good stuff like this facial toner. It revitalizes the skin and removes excess cleanser. It’s unisex, so girl’s can use it as a make-up remover too.
Peppermint Foot Spray from The Body Shop: My guilty pleasure is having my feet pampered. This bottle of peppermint goodness is a hiker’s best friend. A quick spritz in the summer and your feet will feel like it could walk up the Himalayas and back again. It gives your feet a fresh scent and nice, tingly sensation.

Are you looking to shop at a place that is close to Loyola, fashionable, and most importantly, affordable? Look no further than Belmont Army. Even though the name and look of the store from the outside can seem intimidating, this place has a lot of great fashion finds.
Belmont Army is an independent clothing store located in the Lakeview neighborhood, right off the Belmont red line stop. The store is huge, with five floors of clothing. The first floor is trendy clothes, the second floor is shoes, the third floor is military surplus (military uniforms and bags, kind of intimidating in my opinion) and the fourth floor is vintage. The entire basement is dedicated to skate clothing.
Belmont Army carries a variety of different brands for both men and women. Some of these brands include Cheap Monday, BB Dakota and Tulle for women and Adidas, Vans and Obey for men. All of the salespeople there are super friendly and always willing to help you. Belmont Army prides itself in being an original flagship store, and for supporting Chicago.

Belmont Army offers a lot of great options for spring. One of the brands I really like there is BLANK NYC, which sells mostly denim products. My favorite is the Slim Fit Jacket, which is pictured above. The lightweight wash of the jacket, as well as the worn in feel, make it an essential item for spring. This would look great layered with almost any skirt or dress.
Another brand I like is Tulle. This brand has a lot of girly, feminine clothing at Belmont Army. My favorite item is the pink polka dot dress. This dress ties at the waist, so it is flattering for any body shape. It has convenient side pockets as well. The pattern and shape of the dress make it wearable for any occasion. The dress is easy to layer with. It would even look good with the denim slim fit jacket.
Belmont Army is a unique clothing store in Chicago. All Loyola students should give this store a try. It is easily accessible, affordable and there is something for everyone.

To go through his mind is like going through a series of vivid movies. His eyes allow his mind to take simple details of everyday life and turn them into elaborate storylines, and it is his imagination that gives him the ability to create such brilliant works of art. Omar Villalobos, the vice president and creative director of GOCA designs, is a true visionary. He doesn’t see fashion as just clothes and a hobby, it’s about telling a story.
At just 20 years old, Villalobos has achieved so much in a short amount of time. Eight months ago, GOCA was just a dream shared by his partner in crime Gordana Rasic, president of GOCA designs. Today, they have shown their designs at several fashion shows, and recently just returned from their own showing at New York Fashion Week. Although his world is moving at 100 mph, Villalobos

still takes time to remember where he came from. Growing up in a family of 10 wasn’t so easy. He faced financial issues, but nevertheless persevered, and made his dreams come alive. Villalobos amazingly continues to stay humble through all his success. He stresses that “I’m not lucky; I work so hard for what I want. Nothing was handed to me, and I want people to see that through hard work they too can reach their dreams.”
Villalobos describes GOCA fashion as “culture.” GOCA integrates the beauty of many different cultures into the different color schemes and details of the designs. GOCA captures the energetic vibes, purity, and simplistic values of these cultures. Villalobos finds his inspiration in nature, whether it is the outdoors or human nature. “I watch how the grass moves with the wind or how a piece of clothing flows on a woman…I just want to be able to capture such simple, yet powerful movements

into the GOCA designs.” GOCA combines elegance with an edgy twist. Villalobos wants people to get “pulled into this alternate world when they see our shows, not just models walking down a runway, but your everyday woman coming alive. It’s about her independence, her lifestyle, it’s her story.”

Shop Local: Florodora
Location: 330 S. Dearborn St. (Monadnock Building)
How to Get There: Get off the Red Line at Jackson, and walk west.
Price Range: $100-$300
Vibe: Contemporary and Feminine
A Florodora girl is many things, including scandalous. Almost hidden in the loop is this treasure of a contemporary store, Florodora. Featuring Chicago based designers, as well as independent and niche brands, Florodora has unique pieces for the Chicago woman.

Owner, Michael Blossom, informed me of the rich Broadway history, and the behavior of Florodora girls, for which the store is inspired by. These women were talented, beautiful, and a little scandalous. The store has a unique vibe and fits the independent and beautiful woman, like a Floradora.
Florodora offers cotemporary and femininely sexy pieces. Their leather accessories are impeccable and unique.

According to store associate, Heather, Florodora is not a sales based business, so when there is a sale, it truly is scandalous.
Florodora features local hat designer Hautete.

The pictured hat is adorned by a dried mushroom. Hautete by Nedda Mostafa uses unconventional objects to make their pieces.
Florodora also features local jewelry maker Melissa Banks and her line Rapt in Malle.
Jewelry in the Rapt of Malle line balances between feminine and masculine, and incorporates contemporary elements. The bracelet pictured below was my favorite piece.

Florodora shoes is also located in the Monadnock building, only a couple store fronts away from. The shoe store is a continuation of the Florodora brand. Hautete hats and Rapt in Malle jewelry can be found in both locations.

Bigger men, rejoice! This season marks the end of skinny. Since the beginning of the decade, fashion observers have noticed a tendency that many menswear designers are doing: they are pumping up the volume and widening their horizons. This fall’s silhouette includes broad shoulders, layers of puffy jackets, wider waists and looser fit pants.
In Paris, Kris van Assche showcased a collection of loosely-fit military coats and draping cloaks paired with baggy harem pants for Dior Homme; an extreme evolution from the brand’s earlier collections since its start in 2001 under Hedi Slimane, pioneer of the razor-thin fit for menswear (Slimane was even attributed by Karl Lagerfeld who said, “I suddenly wanted to dress differently, to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane… but these fashions, modeled by very, very slim boys—and not men my age—required me to lose at least 40 kg.”)

Illustration By Adilla Menayang/The Chameleon. GANT by Michael Bastian.
Well, the “slim boy” body has been phased out as the ideal for quite some time. Is it a coincidence that the heartthrobs of the past few years also happen to be fuller bodied men? Last year, the covers of GQ and Esquire featured a more muscular Ryan Gossling, Ryan Reynolds and Matt Damon, compared to the leaner, adolescent figures of men like Zac Effron, Shia LeBeouf, Jude Law, Tobey Maguire and Adrian Brody who graced the GQ covers in the latter half of the past decade.
In Milan, the traditionally slim-fit and tailored-crazed Christopher Bailey showcased a collection of suits and jackets that flows more than hug the body for Burberry Prorsum’s Fall 2012 collection. Although the tapered pants stay true to the traditional English style, the sweaters and blazers that accompanied it were bulkier and more voluminous than past seasons.
Not many designers dared to add as much volume to the pants as they did the clothing for the upper body. Other than Yohji Yamamoto and Kris van Aasche, there weren’t many other designers who showcased baggy pants. The idea still seems farfetched to many, and it’s definitely a risk; baggy pants don’t really work well with the proportions of a lean, shorter man.

Illustration By Adilla Menayang/The Chameleon. Maison Martin Margiela.
Even though the rise of baggy and loose clothes may seem to be a horror story for the smaller men, it shouldn’t be. Wearing skinny and slim fit clothing has transcended being a fad or a trend. It has become a staple for those who honestly just look better when they wear slim-fitted clothes, and one will not look out of date when sporting trim jackets and skinny ties. When GQ published its “Men of the Year” edition in December 2011, one of the special covers featured Justin Timberlake, who was still wearing the slim-fit suit with skinny tie combo that has been a trend since 2004, but is now simply a must-have for lean men.

Vogue’s hottest trends have been posted- high waists are back!
Among the modern trends of prints and bright colors, waists must also be defined. We’ve just left the fashion stint of low waist bands, which are in my opinion, very unflattering. They let everything hang out and do nothing to define a woman’s most attractive curve, the waist. It’s the smallest and most flattering part of a woman’s body.
High waists are underrated. The look has been transformed throughout the decades: a womanly waist band on a dainty dress in the 30s and 40s and an in vogue look in the 70s and 80s. High waists continue to transform as they make a comeback in our modern fashion sense. Now, the formal look gives a womanly silhouette, but it can be converted from a delicate, girlish look to a fierce feminine outfit. High waisted pants can make a woman’s body look essentially flawless. They elongate the figure (especially when worn with heels), slim the waist and hide all unwanted lumps and bulges. But beware of a faulty high waist. Shoppers must be very selective so that they can avoid “mom jean” territory.
The high waist accentuates a woman’s natural curve, which suits it better to the womanly body than low rise pants or skirts. High waisted pants should be worn with either cropped or tucked in tops so that the waistline remains visible for that emphasis. The style is best paired with opposites. So, a pencil skirt may be best paired with a loose top, and a wide pant may be best with a fitted top or lean jacket.
The high waisted pant or skirt is a stand- out look. It’s bold and lets people know the power of a woman. The 70s/80s look has been modernized to still be bold while also being flashy and polished.

It’s Fashion Week Season and once again we are besieged by the whimsical and outrageous creations of our favorite designers.
In Paris we saw nostalgic designs of Valentino, Chanel, and Dior. The predominant trend from these fashion houses…. flowers. They are everywhere this season and you can expect them to be the most popular print this year.
For the more risk taking fashionistas Viktor and Rolf certainly provided edgier options. Their structured clothes were over the top, showcasing styles the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland would love.
Whatever your style may be sure to check out the beautiful designs.

A unique store I visited last weekend is called Lori’s Shoes, and the store is known as “the sole of Chicago.” Lori’s Shoes is located on Armitage Street, off the brown line stop. The store is in the swanky Lincoln Park neighborhood, surrounded by other trendy stores, including BCBG MAXAZRIA, Lucky Brand and Kiehl’s.
If you are a shoe fanatic (like me) this is the place to go. Every kind of shoe you can think of is in this store. From flats to heels, from basic to trendy or from casual to dressy, there is something for everyone. Even though high-end stores surround the place, Lori’s Shoes has items that are affordable for college students. Some of the more affordable brands in this store include Blowfish, Chinese Laundry, Charles David, and Steve Madden. If you want to window shop or buy something higher-end, brands include Dolce Vita, Frye and various Italian brands.

"Eltonn" by Steve Madden, lorisshoes.com.
On this page are two of my favorite picks from the store. My first pick is this pair of wedges, called “Finder” by Jolia, and they are only $45. I love the pop of color in these wedges. They would be cute with a black sundress once spring rolls around. My second pick is this pair of “Eltonn” flats by Steve Madden. I always love flats that stand out. These glittery shoes would be perfect for spicing up your T-shirt and jeans outfit for class. These flats are $60.
And if you are in need of a pair of boots for the rest of Chicago’s cold winter, you are in luck. Lori’s Shoes is having a huge clearance event right now, and shoes from the winter season are majorly discounted, some shoes as much as seventy-five percent. Also, in addition to a ton of shoes in the store, Lori’s Shoes also carries jewelry, handbags and hats.
If you are in need of shoes for any occasion, Lori’s Shoes is one of the best places in Chicago. With all of the brands and styles available, every shopper is sure to leave happy. Be sure to check out other stores and restaurants around this place as well. This is one of Chicago’s nicest areas.

The best time to wear an ugly sweater is Christmastime!
By Ericka Reyes
Chameleon Fashion Blogger
The holiday season brings with it cherished traditions: decorating the Christmas tree, baking cookies, and of course ugly sweaters.
Every year you receive that invitation to an ugly sweater party and chances are you have a perfectly cringe worthy knit in the back of your closet for the occasion.
These parties seem to be the only occasions when you can wear jingle bells and red nosed reindeers without shame. Any other time and it would be a fashion faux pas, right?
Wrong. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the time to act like a kid and wear that ridiculous sweater that your aunt Jane gave you.
Get into the spirit of the season, have fun, and be outrageous with your holiday fashion choices. After all, besides Halloween, Christmas is the only time you can be as extreme as you want without risking your fashion reputation.
The pictures featured are some of my favorite holiday fashion picks.

Each third Friday, I will come to you with a decade fashion tip.
Here’s a classic look for winter and the upcoming holidays.
This look never goes out of style. The outfit resembles fashion of the 1930s with a hint of the 40s, but the wedge heels and lacy top give it a modern touch.
Each piece can be worn in a different combination- I only bought the top and skirt together.
But, I can wear the top with jeans, and the skirt looks great with a black tank and a sweater.
This combination is timeless and comfortable, great for any occasion.

This outfit was quickly thrown together one night before going out on-the-town with the girls. I wanted to focus on the high-waisted, skinny jeans while at the same time having a sexy feel.
The lace shirt was a dollar at a random thrift store in Colorado, which brought together the late-night atmosphere.
I wore these heals to graduation and still love them because of all the straps, which create a dressy, yet casual feel.
And, of course, thank you to the gorgeous Ellen Holcomb for modeling this outfit.

A new season does not always mean new clothes.
By Nicole Creguer
Chameleon Fashion Blogger
If you’re anything like me, then you can’t wait for the temperature to start dropping and the leaves to start falling. Autumn means cozy sweaters and hot coffee, and lots of crunchy leaves to step on.
The best part is that it usually doesn’t get cold enough to abandon all hope of cuteness, unlike Chicago winters.
Anyways, while I love fall and all of the “crisp-ness” it brings, I don’t love having to buy a whole new wardrobe each season. It seems like just yesterday I was stocking up on crop tops and shorts for summer, and let’s be honest, my bank account still hasn’t fully recovered.
Fortunately, there is a solution. Why not incorporate my summer pieces with fall ones?
For instance, take a fun, breezy crop top and pair it with some preppy summer shorts. Add a chunky knit, some boots, tights, a neutral jacket, and you’re good to go! Have fun with accessories- add a dangly necklace, some feather earrings, maybe even leg-warmers if you’re feeling daring.
Personally, my favorite part of the outfit is the caramel leather vintage bag.
Etsy.com is a great site for people buying and selling niche items and vintage or handmade apparel and housewares. If you haven’t heard of it, go check it out!
Actually you should probably give your credit card to your roommate, then go check it out, just to be on the safe side.
Another summer-goes-fall approach you could try would be to repurpose your breezy, floral dresses.
Add a black turtleneck underneath, or a blazer on top plus fun, patterned tights, and complete the look with ankle boots. I’ve found this is my go-to look for when I have to dress up, but I still want to stay warm and look seasonable.
I’ve added some visual examples below of some cute pieces that would work well for fall.

Hunter Jacket from Forever 21: $37.80

Pure Warmth Infinity Scarf from Urbanog: $19.80
Do you guys have any creative ways you re-use your warm weather pieces? You can give me your two cents (no pun intended) in the comments below.
Remember to stay warm and shop smart!
