TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: Here’s to Boston
By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger It was pretty adorable to eavesdrop on my roommate this morning. She was working hard on a project of hers that’s due tomorrow, but every once in a while, she would stop and let out a cheer. Her brother was running in the Boston Marathon, and she was able to track his progress and his whereabouts online. She also made sure to comment on the photos of him that were posted onto Facebook; you know, the ones that showed off his lovely expanse of man-thigh and his classic running face. If my research serves more »
TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: The One About the Jehovah’s Witnesses
By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger The UPS guy buzzed my apartment just as woke up last Saturday. I headed downstairs to let him in, but SURPRISE! The UPS guy was actually a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses. (I should really start using the intercom to check who my visitors actually are. Lesson learned.) They handed me a little flier inviting me and my neighbors to discover Jesus at some local seminar later in the week. Then they piled on some “Who Was Moses?” pamphlets and gave me a blessing, wasting no time in moving on to the next building. It more »
TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: The best things in life
By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger I’ve always liked Easter because it feels like the spring edition of a New Years celebration. There’s just something about the impending wrap-up of the school year, the occasional glimpses of sunshine that pop through the clouds, Charlton Heston as a salt-and-pepper Moses and the endless supply of Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs that says, “here’s a fresh start! A clean slate!” (Jesus ascending from his grave three days after a brutal crucifixion to assume his prophesied seat at the right hand of his father, the omnipotent God, is pretty inspiring, too.) No, in all more »
TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: Words of Wisdom
By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Spirituality Blogger I had the chance to meet up with a dear old friend a little while back, which was extra special because she is so busy that I would expect her to use any free time she does find to, oh, I don’t know, eat or sleep? She is a graduating senior with a heavy class load, a student teaching position and a job on campus. Girl is overworked and underpaid! Over some burgers and beer we kicked back and caught up, and I tried for the life of me to figure out how more »
TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: The little things
By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger The best text message I’ve received in the past month or so came from my cousin: “I’ve never been so happy to pee on my own.” I guess that was her way of telling me, as I found out later from my mom, that she broke her femur while skiing with some friends over winter break (#Minnesotaproblems) and is now in the slow, painful recovery process after her surgery. Hearing about that recovery process makes me more and more thankful every day that I am not the one going through it. My awareness with more »
TUESDAY SPIRITUALITY: The One About the BandAid Pope and Doing Lent Right
By Maddie Johnston Chameleon Blogger Last Tuesday, Loyola joined the rest of the world in witnessing a real, live papal resignation. Such drama! Such intrigue! And don’t forget a good afternoon’s worth of witty Facebook statuses. One of my personal favorites read, “Well, I guess we know what Pope Benedict is giving up for Lent this year.” At first, that one irked me, simply because I hadn’t thought of it. But then it irked me more because I realized that it sends the wrong message about Papa Benny, and about Lent. We shouldn’t think of either one in the more »
TUESDAY CATHARTIC CANVAS: Ink for a city that brings us all together
By Audrey Kelly Chameleon Tattoo Blogger/ Section Editor Hello all! As we all prepare to head home for some much needed family and food time (or hunker down to hideout here and catch up on sleep and Netflix) I found a tattooed individual that reminded me to appreciate the city we all call home, at least for most of the year. One of the great things about tattoos (which I have mentioned once or twice) is they are a wonderful way to get to know people, and potentially bring people together. When I met Miss Hannah Harlow a few more »
TUESDAY CATHARTIC CANVAS: A tattooed goodbye
By Audrey Kelly Chameleon Section Editor Hello, hello everyone! I’m finally back into the swing of things, and happy to be writing my first blog post of the school year! (I’d forgotten how much I had missed doing this…) So for this week I asked the lovely Tala Said if I could ask her a few questions regarding her new ink (as her tattoo is only about a week old.) First things first, it says “happy” in Arabic. But the plot thickens as far as meaning is concerned for Tala’s tattoo. Her last name translated from Arabic to English literally more »
TUESDAY CATHARTIC CANVAS: To a man
By Bobby Crowley Chameleon Creative Writing Blogger There is a man. There is a man with a mint voice that rumbles in his throat like choked laughter. This new sound he found deep within another man’s cavernous jaw. He caught a glimpse of it sparkle one day while the other man howled in his face. So, he stole it. He thrust deep down past that little pink punching bag and clawed it from its cartilage bungalow. He swallowed it whole, like Jupiter swallowed his children. He consumed it ferociously, because he needed it to live. There is a man more »
TUESDAY CATHARTIC CANVAS: What did I do on World Food Day?
By Phillip- John Puzzo Chameleon Creative Writing Blogger World Food Day was October 16th and 925 million people are hungry right now. I feel passionately about the global hunger issue, but all I did was tweet about World Food Day. My sentiments are genuine, but I made no difference (even something small) to combat against this epidemic. I think that I have a lot of problems. Is my GPA strong enough to get into law school? Am I overcommitted to obligations I don’t even consider very meaningful? Are my parents proud of me or angry because my ambitions don’t more »
